Visitors to Detroit can see the influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement in many of the city’s churches and public buildings. One of the main figures in the Arts and Crafts Movement in Detroit was Mary Chase Perry Stratton who founded the Pewabic Pottery Studio in 1903.
Examples of the distinctive Pewabic tiles and architectural ornamentation can be found at a number of Detroit churches, including the Holy Redeemer Church and St Paul Cathedral, as well as Christ Church at Cranbrook, also a hotbed of the Arts and Craft Movement. Detroit Public Library boasts a beautiful fireplace designed by the studio and newer examples of Pewabic Pottery can be found at the Northwest Terminal at Detroit Airport and Comerica Ballpark.
Pewabic pottery is known for its distinctive iridescent glazes and arts and crafts designs. The pottery continues to produce vessels, tiles and other decorative objects, and welcomes visitors to tour its studio and shop.
